Bang Off
Today I discovered that a store I really like is actually owned by a gross Canadian holding company, and that there are many just like it all over the world (Sydney? Montreal? San Juan?)
The people in the shop, which is on Avenue B, are just "workers" and the "owners" are actually in Canada. The store sells deadstock sunglasses and decals, essentially, of every pop culture throwback you can think of, and slaps 'em on to American Apparel T-shirts. Which was fine if some outta work actor or musician in NYC was doing it... but the thought that it is some Tony Hawk-style custom T-shirt gurging empire is a little gross.
Am I mad? No. But I was going to add Bang On to my book as an "independent shop"... little did I know, the masterminds behind this one were a little too world-dominated out.
